Private label is taking shelf share from our CPG brand. Where do we hold the line?

Signal detected

Private label now takes 24% of food and beverage dollars, per Food Industry Executive on 17 September 2026, which means your shelf problem is not a marketing problem; it is a question of which of your SKUs has a reason to exist at a premium.

Strategic direction

Stop defending shelf and start defending preference; shelf is the retailer's asset, preference is yours. Cut the undifferentiated tail, concentrate everything behind the SKUs where a shopper would feel the loss, and make the product itself the argument again rather than buying your way back into an aisle you no longer control. Monday: run the survivability cut. The one question I would ask in a two-day session: of the shoppers who tried private label in your category last year, how many came back, and what brought them back? If you do not know, that is the first thing we build.
